Standard’s Under-13 cricketers prevail against Thoiry in gripping contest
by Chris Lyles
Whether there was more tension out in the middle or amongst the spectators at the British School of Paris on the third Sunday of May is a moot point. But Standard’s Under-13 cricketers won an enthralling Twenty20 encounter against their Thoiry counterparts by the nailbiting  argin of 14 runs. So, hats off to each and every one of Standard’s ten players – Thibault, Max, Hugo, Hathorn, Isaac C, Jack, Luca, Isaac D, Benjamin and Raphaël – for an outstanding collective performance.  With each player having to bat with a partner for four overs and bowl two overs, no one individual was out of the action for long. Just as importantly, such a format means that everyone has the opportunity to improve their batting and bowling skills – whether they like it or not! Wides and no balls counted as two runs while three runs were deducted from the batting side every time a wicket fell.  Standard, who elected to bat first after winning the toss, built a solid foundation by scoring 25 runs in the opening four overs without losing a wicket. And the eventual total of 55 proved to be a respectable, if not mountainous, one. In reply, Thoiry were slightly behind the required rate for most of their innings, although they still harboured realistic hopes of victory before losing five wickets in the last four overs to enable Standard to celebrate a much deserved triumph.  Both sides were very evenly matched in the batting and bowling departments, but perhaps the crucial difference between the teams lay in the fielding, with Standard taking their catches and pulling off some excellent run outs and stumpings.  Congratulations, therefore, to all of the Standard team and to all the other youngsters who attend the Saturday coaching sessions. Thoiry will be looking to exact revenge when we receive them in June.
