Standard’s junior footballers fall to Magnavilla

by Chris Lyles

Standard sent two junior football teams to do battle against Magnavilla in Meudon on the penultimate Sunday of January.  Alas for SAC, who battled valiantly in what proved to be a brace of keenly-fought skirmishes, the Club had to doff their collective cap in both matches, with the elder Standard side falling to a late strike in an oscillating 5-4 thriller and the younger team going down by a 6-3 margin.

Despite the fact that Magnavilla, who were acting as the host club, used the fast, skiddy pace of the all-weather surface with a mite more acumen than their Standard counterparts, it could have been a different outcome for SAC’s elder boys, who hurried into a 2-0 lead, with the opening score being a thunderous effort that arrowed into the top right-hand corner from fully 20 yards out.  But a 2-0 advantage rapidly metamorphosed into a 4-2 deficit before the visitors pulled a goal back to make it 4-3 at the break.  In a tight second half, Standard drew level following a corner before agonisingly conceding a late goal and even then having a strong penalty appeal for handball denied.

In the younger-boys match, 6-3 might seem like a comfortable margin of victory, but it truly could have been a very different outcome.  Following a lacklustre first-half display, after which they trailed 4-1, SAC were vastly improved in the second period.  It is no exaggeration to report that the Magnavilla goalkeeper made six or so outstanding saves in the second half to keep SAC at arm’s length. And good for him – it was a marvellous man-of-the-match performance.
